Don't ignore this dashboard light, TPMS.

What’s this light on my dash mean?

  • If you’ve seen this light it's the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) light. But don’t worry—you’re not alone. This safety feature monitors the air pressure in your tires, ensuring they’re at optimal levels for safe driving. Often shaped like a horseshoe with an exclamation point inside, the TPMS light is one of the easier dashboard warnings to address. Here’s how to manage it, why it comes on, and when you might need professional assistance.

Why Does the TPMS Light Come On?

As the seasons change, fluctuating temperatures can cause your tire pressure to drop. For every 10-degree decrease in temperature, your tires can lose around 1 PSI (pound per square inch) of pressure. In fall and winter, this can lead to low-pressure readings that activate the TPMS warning. If your tires drop below the recommended PSI, the system alerts you, helping prevent issues like blowouts, poor handling, and increased tire wear.

What to Do When the TPMS Light Comes On

    1. Check Your Tire Pressure
Keep a tire pressure gauge in your glove box to check your tire pressure when needed. Quality Automotive Servicing offers complimentary gauges—just stop by during business hours to pick one up. If you’re unfamiliar with checking tire pressure, our service advisors will gladly walk you through it.

    2. Inflate Your Tires as Needed
If the light comes on, your tires likely need a bit of air. You can stop by Quality Automotive Servicing or any nearby service station with an air pump. Adding air may be all it takes to turn off the light and ensure your tires are at the right PSI level.

    3. Watch for Temperature Variations
The TPMS light might turn on and off as outdoor temperatures fluctuate, especially in colder months. If it persists, it’s a sign to check your tire pressure and possibly add air.

    Don’t Ignore Low Tire Pressure

Driving on under-inflated tires can be dangerous. Not only can it affect handling and fuel efficiency, but it also increases the risk of blowouts and uneven tire wear. Properly inflated tires extend tire life and keep you safer on the road.
